Our Story

Janet Z. Capua woke up one spring morning in 2008 and decided she was ready for a change. At 63 years old, and after 40 years as a dental hygienist, she decided to pursue her true passion in life.

She was known in Fort Worth for her food. Legend has it that one time, after hearing that 100 international student visitors were hungry, she cooked all night long, packed the car, and arrived in time to serve breakfast!

With the help of a few good friends Janet launched a home-based catering business, literally going door to door selling sandwiches and salads.

December 2008 would be the turning point, as she partnered with local non-profit Samaritan House to open Z’s Café in the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. Janet would cook, son Carlo would run the business, and residents and caretakers from Samaritan House would join the team, learning food and service skills while getting back in the workforce.

The response has been overwhelming. Z’s Café has quickly gained a reputation for outstanding food, beautiful presentation, and top-notch service.  As a social entrepreneurship enterprise, we work with 200+ local non-profits, often supporting fundraising efforts.  And we’re committed to treating everyone who walks through the door like family.

One of our proudest achievements is witnessing our staff (many of whom are low-income individuals) do things both they, and society, once thought impossible. In other words, they shine even brighter than we could have imagined.

The motto of “Food, Family, Friends” is the heart of our philosophy as both restaurateurs and Dallas and Fort Worth caterers.  We hope you will support this joint venture
and stop by for our signature chicken salad, which has become widely regarded as the “best ever.”
